We have all heard of companies that didn’t, or wouldn’t, change with the times … and suffered the consequences (think Blockbuster Video, Blackberry Motion or Kodak) as well as those who did see the “writing on the wall” and made the necessary adjustments and thrived (such as Amazon, Nokia – which started out making rubber boots - and Apple).
Today’s Member Spotlight is about a German-based company that made the radical changes needed for continued growth not just once, but twice!
The title of this Member Spotlight is … From Clothes Pins to Cables to Robotic Support … Murrplastik Systems Inc. - Staying Ahead of the Curve AND Winning!
Murrplastik Systems Inc. began in 1963 as a manufacturer of small household goods, including clothes pins. Rising competition from Asia for these low-cost products encouraged Murrplastik to find new ways to apply their expertise in plastics, and in particular to the cabling industry. Today they are a high-quality leader providing injection molded cable management products such as conduits, fittings and accessories. One specialty is to provide custom-designed panels to better organize multiple cables – often found in large circuitry panels. Rather than searching through a jumble of cables these panels save customers time, space and money. In addition, customers can take advantage of Murrplastik’s hi-tech labeling systems designed for single wires, control gear, cables, and more. The system is one of the most universal on the market and can provide labels for virtually every environmental situation. In fact, Murrplastik is just about to launch a new label printer that requires no drying time – allowing for quick and efficient installations and updates.
As Murrplastik perfected its expertise in supporting the cabling industry another opportunity to leverage their capabilities and experience came to their attention from a few forward-focused sales team members. What started as an idea 8 years ago has grown into a large segment of business for them. What is it? Robot support - designing and supplying dresspacks across a wide range of industries. (What is a dresspack you ask? A robot dresspack refers to the cable and hose routing for a robot system to power and guide the robot’s actions. You might also refer to it as a “wiring harness”. The cables are on the outside of the robot, to allow for easy adjustment or removal for repair purposes.)
The use of robots in manufacturing has continued to increase substantially year to year with the automotive industry being the largest user and the electrical/electronic industry running a close second. It is a growing industry and Murrplastik is growing with it by developing a niche as a high-quality, high-service provider. Murrplastik designs and delivers fully populated robotic dresspack solutions for any robotic application; using universally applicable elements for hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic cables and wires for all standard robots. Many dresspacks are cycle tested by “Roberta” their in-house test robot to ensure their resistance on certain projects.
In conclusion, I don’t know about you, but when I hear about a company that has stayed ahead of the curve by recognizing when changes are necessary, often really difficult changes, I applaud their efforts with a standing ovation. Companies who are as innovative, nimble and flexible as Murrplastik has proven itself to be will secure themselves a place in the future – because they know the only thing that remains constant is change. And finally, one last comment - we all recognize that a critical component in operating a successful company is staying informed about industry and economic trends. The EACC has really benefitted long-time member Murrplastik in this regard, serving as a single, reliable source for domestic and international information.
