EACC Behind the Scenes - November 2017

EACC in 2018:  Programs & Strategic Goals

As we approach the end of the year, there’s always a desire to look back and see what we have achieved – and that will be the subject of my “Behind the Scenes’ article next month.  However, this is also the time when we focus on 2018 and where should we be going.  In that vein, I thought I’d highlight a few projects that are in the works.

Of course our signature programs will continue; we’ve already started planning for our Annual Gala (mark your calendars now – Wednesday, May 16!) and the Beaujolais Nouveau (November 15!).  Stammtisch will continue to be the first Thursday of every month; l’Aperitif will be the third Thursday of every other month (starting January 18). And our Young Professionals program will also go on, along with our new Women’s Initiative with the Association for Corporate Growth.

Let me break this down along our “Pillars” – Business Development, Talent Development, and Economic Development.  In Business Development, EACC Cincinnati will be hosting the first ever meeting of all the EACC chapters May 15-16 (in connection with our Annual Gala).  So our chapters in Paris, Lyon, Toulouse, New York, New Jersey, the Carolinas – and maybe even our new chapters in Boston and Amsterdam – will be here to discuss how to deliver more value to our collective members and grow the network.  I will also ask our Business Development committee to review our current membership levels and structure to ensure the benefits we offer are price competitive.  I want to do a better job of understanding what each of our member companies is doing, and to share that with the broader EACC membership.  Along those lines, Dayna and I are considering adding a regular “membership profile” to the weekly Newsbrief.  [If your firm wants to be featured, please let me know!]  In that same vein, I’m planning to do far more site visits to your companies in 2018.

In Talent Development, I’m working with the committee to develop a strategic plan for 2018 and beyond that builds on current talent related programming (such as our Young Professionals and Women’s programming).  With so many other organizations (and our own members) doing great work in this area, my goal is for the EACC to be a cheerleader, a connector, and an advocate.  We will play on our unique European connections while avoiding duplication of effort.

Finally, for Economic Development, our Economic Development Committee is also developing a strategic plan for 2018 and beyond with a focus on a few countries (such as Italy and the Netherlands) and sectors (advanced manufacturing, water).  That could include a trip to Italy early next year as well as a visit to meet trade commissioners and consulates in Chicago.

Lots of opportunities (including sponsorship opportunities) await us in 2018.  I’m anxious to hear your ideas and reactions!

2017 Beaujolais Nouveau Première

On Thursday, November 16, the EACC and the French-American Business Alliance (FABA) hosted our annual Beaujolais Nouveau Première celebration at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza.

This yearly event is always held on the third Thursday in November and celebrates the first wine of the harvest. In fact, “Beaujolais Nouveau has deep roots in French wine history dating back to the 1800s when Beaujolais grape growers and winemakers would hold a "fête" to celebrate the harvest, toasting their bounty with some of the "young wine" just made. The timing of the release of food-friendly Beaujolais Nouveau has made it a herald of the holiday season and a staple of Thanksgiving tables across the United States.” (Please click here to learn more and view the Quintessential Wines press release regarding Les Vins Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau).
Interestingly, this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau marks the 35th year of Nouveau in the U.S. and “features, for the first time in the wine's history, an artist's work on its label. The mixed-media piece, "Candy Coated," was created by St. Petersburg, Fla., artist Ari Azzopardi-Robinson, selected for the inaugural "Artist Collector Series" label by a fan vote on social media. Her work is now "on view" on more than a million bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau in the U.S.” (Please click here to learn more and view the Quintessential Wines press release regarding Les Vins Georges Duboeuf's Beaujolais Nouveau).
Preparations for this year’s EACC & FABA Beaujolais celebration began in summer 2017. Todd and I were delighted to once again feature exciting silent auction items, including roundtrip tickets to Europe donated by Delta Air Lines. In addition, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to incorporate several new elements into this year’s event, including:
  • A refresh of the menu to include dishes from the Beaujolais region, such as Quiche with Leek, Mushroom and Onions; Daube Beaujolaise (Beef Bourguignon) with Potato Mousseline; Shrimp Ravioli with fresh Tomato Sauce and roasted Fennel; Vegetable Pistou; Poire au vin; Chocolate Mousse; and Tarte aux Pommes
  • A variety of new silent auction items, such as Southwest Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air tickets; dinner at Lisse Steakhuis; Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park tickets; Cincinnati Reds scout seat tickets; and a Xavier men’s basketball package
  • Celebrity auctioneers Jeff Berding and Yoann Damet from FC Cincinnati
  • A raffle featuring two Jeff Berding signed copies of Rise Together: Celebrating FC Cincinnati's Inaugural Season
At the event itself, we welcomed 150 guests as we gathered in the Pavillion Ballroom. Remarks were offered by Todd, EACC Board President Doug Moormann of Development Strategies Group and EACC Board Vice President Yannick Schilly of Festo. Jeff Berding and Yoann Damet helped us kick off the event with the traditional announcement “Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrivé” and encouraged guests to bid throughout the evening. Overall, it was a remarkable night celebrating our region and its international business community.
We’d like to send a big thank you to our event sponsors (Cru sponsor: Safran Landing Systems Vendange Sponsors: CVG Airport; Deceuninck North America, Development Strategies Group, DHL Express USA, Greater Cincinnati Foreign Trade Zones, and Safran Aircraft Engines), our silent auction donors, Jeff Berding and Yoann Damet, and our event volunteers. We’d also like to thank Stephanie Lallement for her help in designing this year’s menu, as well as all the guests who attended. We are deeply appreciative of your support.
